While it seems certain the world will be affected in myriad ways, as investors we think deeply about the path to that end-state, and where to make investments to help accelerate that journey. Finding more achievable near-term use cases are critical, both in terms of maintaining momentum for a start-up and in enhancing the real-world experience required to service a broader and broader set of use cases.
Much has been written about how AVs will affect the world around us and how they will transform the multi-trillion dollar transportation industry.
Building an AV requires being at the forefront of technology across many capabilities, including machine vision, sensor fusion, control systems, and system integration. The authors point out that immigrants may have informal resources such as cheap and loyal ethnic labor, the ability to make transactions in the native languages of immigrants, information on immigrant preferences, and links with the origin countries of immigrants which help in the establishment and running of small businesses.
This paper investigates the differential self-employment propensities between the native-born, immigrants with Canadian education, and immigrants with no Canadian education. Enabling generalized AV uses cases across all vehicle types, road situations, speeds, and geographies is the ultimate goal, but getting there will take time.
As their technology lead grows, investor interest will shift away from full-stack start-ups and toward companies building best-of-breed capabilities for each piece of the technology stack — e. We also believe Optimus may be one of the last of the full-stack AV start-ups to get significant investor backing.
In addition, given the high demands on safety and reliability, real-world experience is extremely important. Identifying those uses cases requires a deep understanding of how the urban mobility landscape is changing and it requires the ability to work with cities and communities to define realistic roll-out plans for AV solutions.
Out-migration significantly increased through time contributing to a decelerating rate of urbanization, but low-status laborers continued to migrate out of the labor force at a significantly greater rate than skilled and white-collar workers. They therefore consider self-employment.
I particularly liked this recent article by the former vice-chairman of GM.
There are only a small handful of teams in the world who have both the technical skills and real-world experience that are required for success. As we spoke to numerous AV companies and experts, three themes emerged as a guide to our investment thesis: This experience has enabled them to be very thoughtful about specific use cases for early deployments, provided unique insights into customer experience requirements, and has allowed them to quickly become trusted thought partners to the cities and communities they seek to serve.
As we got to know the team as Optimus Ride over the last several months, we came away increasingly impressed by how well positioned they are across each of these themes. Many immigrants are unfamiliar with the social, economic, and legal structures of the host society, and encounter problems with languages, non-recognition of their credentials, and discrimination.
The Optimus team also has extensive experience researching and developing next-generation urban mobility solutions. This paper reports findings from a study using census data for self-employed small business owners in non-professional occupations, self-employed professionals, andwage-earners.
However, as the technologies standardize, only a few full-stack start-ups will be able to maintain technology differentiation, and instead, we will see an emerging ecosystem of best of breed start-ups specializing in various parts of the AV stack.
However, in the long term, access to resources will put incumbents at an increasing advantage for production-scale rollouts. Lynd in the Middletown study of Muncie.
The "floating prolitariat" continued as a phenomenon in Muncie into the twenties. These findings suggest that self-employment represents real economic opportunity for immigrants. The blocked mobility or relative disadvantage thesis argues that relative disadvantages experienced by immigrants in the labor market in the host society cause many to turn to self-employment as an alternative to wage labor.
Previous research into this issue has failed to distinguish between self-employment in professional and non-professional occupations. The team has worked together for nearly a decade at MIT building AVs, and they are one of the few successful finishers at the Darpa Urban Challengewhich has proven to be the breeding ground for most of the best AV companies today.
City directory listings on Muncie, Indiana provided the source data for a re-assessment of the blocked-mobility thesis asserted by Robert S. Immigrants may therefore find it difficult to land a job in the core sectors of the economy, especially if they do not have additional education or training in the host country.
Thus, while Blocked mobility thesis mobility was decreasing, as reported by the Lynds, that decrease occurred with the deceleration rather than the advent of industrialization. Such individuals are more likely than those of similar educational level among either the native-born or immigrants with Canadian education to become self-employed in non-professional occupations.
We feel fortunate to have the opportunity to partner with Optimus Ride to help get there! The journey to our autonomous future will be incredibly exciting and is well underway. As a city declining in regional dominance, Muncie served as a "stage" in the movement of rural populations into increasingly larger cities.
Having spent many months researching the space, we thought this was a great opportunity to share our views on the investing landscape for AVs and why we are so excited about Optimus Ride. At lower levels of education, immigrants overall also have higher self-employment propensities in non-professional occupations than native-born Canadians.
We are already seeing the early stages of this shift, and having met many of these companies, we are extremely impressed by what we see. From a technology perspective, the Optimus team is truly world class.Blocked Mobility and the Rise of Cultural Nationalism: A Reassessment USES OF THE BLOCKED MOBILITY THESIS The mechanism of blocked mobility has provided researchers with an.
